The RIFLES exercise Freedom of Plymouth with parade through streets

Large crowds gathered in Plymouth last Saturday (September 25) to greet hundreds of soldiers from The RIFLES, which was formally awarded the Freedom of the City.

More than a thousand people lined the streets cheering and waved Union Jacks as the Riflemen from 4 RIFLES, who led the parade, marched past with standards flying.

They were followed by 6 RIFLES, the TA infantry Battalion for the South West, the Salamanca Band and Bugles of the Rifles as well as veterans from the Devon and Dorset Association and cadets from Plymouth ACF.

The Freedom of the City gives the regiment the privilege of marching with drums beating, colours flying, and bayonets fixed.

The honour was granted to the Rifles in November 2009 but was formalised with a parade, followed by the presentation of scrolls.

Describing local people as the "fifth pillar" of the regiment, Brigadier Jackson, Colonel The Rifles South West said: "Without you and your support and encouragement we couldn't do this.

"When we see how many of you turned out to support us it makes us really humble and grateful."

Many of the Riflemen marching through Plymouth had recently returned from testing tours in Afghanistan.

One of them was Rifleman Peter Matthews from 4 RIFLES. The 21-year-old from nearby Saltash has just been awarded the Queen's Commendation for Bravery for his actions during his recent service in Afghanistan with 3 RIFLES.

"It feels like I've come home," said the Rifleman. "To march in front of your friends and family, it makes you very proud."
